Baptisms

At St Mungo’s, we love baptisms! They’re a wonderful place to demonstrate our own commitment to following Jesus, and to celebrate others who are doing so too!

What is Baptism?

Baptism is a visual and symbolic demonstration of someone identifying with Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection through being immersed and then rising from the water.  It is a public declaration of a person’s intention to follow Jesus.  In being baptised a person is declaring that:

  • Our former way of life has been put to death

  • We have been released from the control of sin.

  • We are now living in the new life that Jesus has won for us in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Why Be Baptised?

There are three reasons for being baptised:

  • To obey the commands of Jesus. (Matt 28:18–20)

  • To demonstrate that a person is a disciple of Jesus. (Acts 2:37–41)

  • To follow the example of Jesus. (Matt. 3:13-17)

Getting baptised is an act of obedience but it does not save us.  We are saved by God’s grace, through faith as the Bible makes this clear in Ephesians 2:8-9:

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.

We decide to be baptised out of a response to God’s grace, God forgiveness and love in our lives.
