Prison Ministry

St Mungo's now has an established link with the Edinburgh Prison, through the Chaplaincy service there. A small team from St Mungo's and Holy Trinity (Wester Hailes) are currently doing sessional work with some of the men, focusing on major life issues. There has also been opportunity to lead Sunday morning worship meetings.

Holy Trinity (Wester Hailes)

St Mungo’s has an established link with Holy Trinity (Church of Scotland) at Wester Hailes. We are involved in providing volunteers to support their church based  social action ministries. These include a Café, a Food and Clothes store and an After School Club. All of these activities run on a Wednesday to Friday basis, with the exception of the After School Club which runs on a Wednesday afternoon

 The Care Van

The Care Shelter and the Care Van are managed jointly by Edinburgh City Mission and Bethany Christian Trust, and use the skills and services of volunteers from 32 churches in Edinburgh, St Mungo’s included.

The Care Van has been operating since 1990, and serves coffee, soup and rolls to people in need 364 days a year (not on Hogmanay). For many people it is the first contact they have with a compassionate, accepting, love-in-action service, and many then choose to make use of other rehabilitation services running in the city. St Mungo’s staffs the van once a month on a Thursday evening and typically volunteers go out two or three times a year. People using the van range from older people who have developed a lifestyle which can include alcohol and sometimes poor personal relationships as well, to younger people who are using drugs, to young teenagers lost in the care system, to families with particular difficulties. People are often glad of a chat and sometimes want to talk about where else they can get help. (Information is provided in the Care Van).

The Care Shelter

The Care Shelter has been running since 1996, starting as a two week initiative over Christmas and New Year. In 1999 the Care Shelter covered 12 winter weeks from December to February and has operated during this period ever since. City centre churches offer their premises and any church offers teams of volunteers to prepare and serve a hot meal and to chat with users of the service during the evening. The shelters are staffed by paid workers from Bethany Christian Trust who stay overnight to ensure consistency, reduce behaviour problems and start to build relationships with the people who use the centre. In a typical year the shelter is used by over 300 different people, with the average stay being about 4 nights. An average of about 20 people use the shelter each night, but this varies from 10 to 40. St Mungos provides teams for four of these nights.
