Halloween-
Just harmless fun? As Christians we believe that evil is a real, but defeated, power. Halloween, however, is about evil triumphant; that is the point of the festival in both its medieval and modern forms, however funny or trivial the gear may seem. Halloween is about promoting things that are normally forbidden; it is a celebration of the naughty as if it were nice. In its more serious forms it is about good and evil being reversed. For these reasons as parents and members of the community this is not a festival that we want to endorse or support. As we approach this time of year, we need, as parents, to think about how we speak about this to our children and as members of the community how we celebrate light not darkness. Why not have an alternative party – a ‘light’ or ‘candle’ party with lots of fun party games, or go out for a special treat together as a family. If you have very young children why not host an alternative party with an emphasis on good, wholesome fun. Some examples of party titles:
Let’s use the evening for good, so that God gets the glory, and the children see the life and light that God brings. This year there is a fun packed event (Ytrap - that’s a backwards party!) with plenty of nuf and doof for children in P4 to P7 held in the St Mungo’s church building in Ladycroft Balerno from 7 to 8.30pm. Invitations available from the GoKids groups . Clare Gardner |
