How can you help during the week?
All our serving teams function on a variety of rota systems. Training and taster sessions are available where appropriate.
Courses: many of the mid week courses need teams to help during the day or in the evenings—Alpha, Freedom in Christ, family life courses etc.
Life & Soul Counselling Receptionists: providing a warm, helpful welcome and making people feel comfortable at the Life and Soul counselling service. One evening every 3 weeks.
Bethany Christian Trust: St Mungo’s provides a team for the Bethany Care Van each month which distributes soup etc to the homeless in Edinburgh. Over the winter months teams are also formed to run the Bethany care shelter providing a hot meal and a bed overnight. We also occasionally clean flats ready for new Bethany tenants to move in.
One-Off Events: St Mungo’s puts on, or helps at, community events and activities throughout the year including the Hope weekend in May, Balerno Children’s Gala in May, Balerno Music festival in October and our own Inflatable Day.
Individual Help: occasionally families or individuals need a season of practical help—decorating, diy, gardening, meals, child care, cleaning—or just company. DIY skills are also needed for the maintenance of the 3 church properties.
Youth: Friday evening youth groups (7.30-9.30pm). Activity based groups; anything from football to samba workshops to jewellery making! A safe and fun alternative for young people where they can meet Jesus through the leaders and each other and build strong friendships. There are also youth music evenings and young leader training afternoons which meet monthly and other opportunities to work with S1-6 age young people. Tech support also needed for events.
Minis (babies to 3 years and carers): meets on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings in term time in the church building from 10 to 11.30am. Help always appreciated to play with the children, chat to the adults, do crafts activities, songs — or to serve refreshments.
Creche (o to 4 years): St Mungo’s runs Mum to Mum courses for groups of mums to discuss and develop Christian family values together, and their children need looking after—currently 90 minutes on a Monday afternoon or Thursday morning, on a rota. Help also needed in Wester Hailes with the crèche at their Mothers of Pre Schoolers group.
Men’s and Women’s Ministries: Saturdays every few months —help with set up and tidy up, serve and provide food.
Alpha Meals: The meal is a vital part of the Alpha experience – and a buffet meal and home baking is provided every Thursday (Alpha) and most Mondays (Youth Alpha) in term time. Recipes and cost can be provided.
Ministers’ Lunches: church ministers from all over Scotland meet at St Mungo’s every 6 weeks or so for teaching, worship and prayer ministry. A lunch of soup and home baking is provided. Recipes and cost can be provided.
Courses: home baking is always appreciated on the many courses we run as a church throughout the year—some courses also need people to serve the refreshments.
