How to use the Behringer and Setup Radio Mics

Loading EQ settings
The first thing to do is load the equalisation settings for the venue that you are in.

  • Use the cursors to select am or pm setting.
  • Hit the load button (soft button A) 3 times:
(first to select load/save menu, then select load, then select OK to confirm loading).
Setting feedback destroyers and radio mic setup
This is a suggested method of setting up radio mics; feel free to do it any way you want to, as long as it works!

What you are doing to reduce the possibility of feedback is to cut certain resonant frequencies (where the feedback occurs). In general terms you want to find where these frequencies are and apply cut to them. However, you can never remove feedback entirely - if you turn a microphone up high enough, then it will feedback. For this reason you should check for feedback at normal running levels - check a mic at 0, not +10 on the desk!

Firstly, find the 3 main feedback frequencies and cut them using the feedback destroyers on the Behringer.

  • Select the FB-D menu (soft-button B from main EQ menu).
(If you are in the wrong menu hit the EQ button to get back to the start of the menus.)
  • You should get the following screen as all feedback destroyer setup is now on 1 menu:

  • Switch first destroyer (L and R) to ON (i.e. automatic search). Do this by moving cursor to FB-D column and press +/-.
  • Turn up radio mic until FBD has found the first frequencies on L & R.
  • Switch first destroyer to OFF (i.e. no searching)
  • Do the same with the other 2 destroyers.

Common frequencies found by the Behringer: approx 5.5K, 500, and either 8.5K or 200. This will probably be different with the new (Sennheiser) mics.

  • When this is done you should find that the 3 main feedback frequencies are cut by the Behringer thus meaning that less frequencies have to be cut on the desk. Find any other frequencies that need cutting by applying cut (of at least -6) and sweeping through the frequency ranges until found. Most voices will need a cut of at least -3 on the LF to remove rumble (except Richard).
  • During the service you will be able to reduce the amount of cut applied as lots of people soak up the sound! Gradually reduce the cuts until as flat as possible (new Sennheiser mics will run fine with no cut except on LF and EQ unit).
If you do get feedback from the radio mics during the service
  • Don't panic - we all get feedback unexpectedly.
  • Check that all mics apart from the radio mic in use are muted.
  • You'll have found the main areas of feedback already so apply more cut on desk at the current frequencies.
  • (use your ears - it will either be above 5K so reduce HF, or around 1-5K in which case reduce HMID, or 100-900 in which case reduce LMID).
